Pope Leo XIV Receives Two Electric Vehicles from Exelentia for Apostolic Travels Around the World

The idea to create two compact electric vehicles, designed to be easily transported by air on long-haul flights and to meet the highest safety standards, was born from a valuable and close collaboration with the Gendarmerie Corps of the Vatican City State, which oversaw and supported each phase of the project.

These two unique electric vehicles are the result of a synergy between engineering design and the high-level mechanical, electronic, manufacturing, and artisanal expertise of the workers and technicians who dedicated themselves to the creation of these exclusive electric transport vehicles. They are intended for the private use of His Holiness, particularly during his papal journeys. This tribute to Pope Leo XIV was personally delivered to the Pontiff by the Exelentia team—an enterprise founded and led by entrepreneurs Domenico and Giovanni Zappia—in collaboration with the Club Car Group, during a private meeting held at the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo on July 3. The event was attended by a delegation from both companies, including their leadership teams and departments involved in the project, along with the technicians and mechanics who worked hands-on to build the vehicles.

The two special vehicles—based on an electric model produced by Garia, a Club Car Group company—were handcrafted with meticulous technical and artisanal work. Particular emphasis was placed on the vehicle’s full sustainability, with zero environmental and noise emissions, and on achieving the highest safety standards, especially considering the need to transport them aboard aircraft during the Holy Father’s international travels. The project was initiated at the request of the Gendarmerie, which validated each step of the development. It was a team effort aimed at maintaining peak efficiency, enhanced by the vehicles' compact size, maneuverability, and agility in navigating narrow spaces and high-footfall areas—pushing the boundaries of traditional design.

These vehicles can be transported safely and conveniently on long-haul flights without the need for disassembly, significantly streamlining boarding and unloading operations and reducing logistical time.

ITA Airways played a key role in the uniqueness of the project by providing vital technical input—particularly in terms of dimensions and anchoring systems—necessary for securing the shuttles aboard long-haul aircraft.

To further enhance usability, the body of the vehicle was customized with the addition of a front grab handle and side supports located beneath the armrests, offering safe grips and increased ease of boarding and disembarking. This makes the vehicle especially suited to accompany and support His Holiness during public appearances in cities around the world.
